Mechanical Design Engineer

Job Purpose:

Our client is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to design mechanical and optical components and systems for LiDAR products, ensuring they meet performance, form, fit and functional requirements while maintaining manufacturability and minimising costs.

Responsibilities: 

  • Design simple, effective and innovative solutions to complex engineering problems.
  • Design mechanical parts, systems and sub-systems for products, test equipment and production jigs using CAD.
  • Apply physics, mechanics and design principles using CAD to optimise engineering solutions.
  • Maintain and manage component libraries in accordance with required standards.
  • Manage development projects to meet required specifications, timelines and budgets.
  • Arrange and conduct regular project update meetings with the Engineering Manager.
  • Collaborate with Procurement and Finance on component cost estimates and final product costing.
  • Collaborate with the Development Team, Production Engineer and Quality Management to ensure designs:
    • Are feasible and manufacturable.
    • Meet form, fit, function and aesthetic requirements.
    • Comply with required certification standards.
  • Prepare test plans and test procedures for opto-electronic systems to verify that specifications are met.
  • Develop and build prototypes using rapid prototyping techniques for testing and validation.
  • Record and evaluate test data, making design modifications as required to meet performance and efficiency requirements.
  • Assist with product certification activities where required.
  • Select appropriate materials and manufacturing processes for each component to ensure reliability and cost-effectiveness.
  • Ensure all design output documentation, including BOMs, drawings, CAD and CAM files, is accurately produced and stored in accordance with company standards.
  • Consult with external manufacturing providers regarding design specifications, provide technical assistance and implement design changes where required.
  • Provide technical support in the design and development of mechanical and optical systems.
  • Provide technical support to Production and assist with resolving manufacturing-related challenges.
  • Liaise with Engineering and Production teams to understand and address difficulties experienced during manufacturing.
  • Provide technical support and after-sales service to customers when required.
  • Work directly with customers to resolve design and manufacturing-related queries where necessary.
  • Research new materials, development methods and emerging technologies to improve product performance.
  • Ensure compliance with the Quality Management System.
  • Ensure compliance with all Safety, Health and Environmental policies and procedures.
Qualifications & Experience:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in mechanical design.
  • In-depth knowledge of Fusion 360 or other 3D CAD software.
  • Experience in additive manufacturing and 3D printing/rapid prototyping is advantageous.
  • Knowledge of optical system design is preferred.
  • Experience within the aerospace industry or other standards- and process-driven industries is advantageous.
  • An investigative mindset with the ability to develop practical solutions to real-world engineering problems.
  • Hands-on approach with proficiency in operating machinery, including lathes, CNC equipment and general workshop tools.
  • Extensive knowledge of fabrication processes, particularly machining and plastic injection moulding.
  • Impeccable attention to detail.
  • Strong planning, scheduling, collaboration and problem-solving skills.
