Head of Water - Sales

Job Purpose:

Our client is seeking a Head of Water Sales to lead all commercial activities within the water services sector. This senior leadership role requires a combination of technical expertise, strategic vision, and strong relationship management skills. The successful candidate will be responsible for driving sales growth, identifying and securing new business opportunities, managing and expanding key client accounts, and developing a high-performing sales team. The role also involves building and maintaining strategic stakeholder relationships, leveraging market insights to support business growth, and contributing to the overall commercial strategy to achieve ambitious revenue and performance targets.

 Responsibilities: 

  • Develop and implement the water division’s sales strategy in line with business growth objectives.
  • Lead, coach, and manage the sales team to consistently achieve and exceed revenue targets.
  • Identify and pursue new business opportunities across municipal, industrial, agricultural, and commercial water sectors.
  • Build and maintain strong, long-term relationships with key clients, including municipalities, water boards, and government departments.
  • Collaborate with engineering and project delivery teams to develop technically sound and commercially competitive proposals and tenders.
  • Monitor industry trends, water legislation, policy changes, and infrastructure funding opportunities to drive strategic growth.
  • Manage the full sales cycle, from prospecting and needs analysis through to contract negotiation and project handover.
  • Prepare and present accurate sales forecasts, pipeline reports, and performance updates to executive leadership.
  • Represent the organisation at industry events, stakeholder engagements, and professional forums.
  • Support bid and tender processes, including pricing strategies, scope development, and client presentations.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree or a related qualification.
  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience in technical or engineering sales, including at least 3 years in a senior leadership role.
  • Strong knowledge of water infrastructure, reticulation, treatment, conservation, and related water services.
  • Proven track record of consistently achieving and exceeding sales targets.
  • Experience working with South African municipalities, water utilities, and government procurement processes is advantageous.
  • Strong commercial acumen with extensive contract negotiation experience.
  • Sound understanding of the National Water Act, MFMA procurement processes, and relevant industry regulations and frameworks.
  • Valid South African driver’s licence.
  • Willingness and ability to travel as required.
