Senior Quantity Surveyor

Job Purpose:

Our client is seeking a Senior Quantity Surveyor to manage and coordinate project resources, personnel, and financial activities to ensure the successful delivery of projects within defined timeframes and budget constraints. The successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing the overall commercial management of contracts, ensuring the maximisation of revenue and profitability through effective forecasting, cost calculations, reconciliations, and stringent cost control measures. The role includes preparing and managing cost reports, payment procedures, and financial performance assessments while ensuring compliance with contractual rights and obligations from both main contractor and subcontractor perspectives. The Senior Quantity Surveyor will also play a key leadership role by managing, mentoring, coaching, and developing team members, while collaborating with stakeholders to support sound commercial decision-making and successful project outcomes

Skills & Responsibilities: 

  • Manage the commercial profitability of projects and ensure alignment with the financial lifecycle of the business.
  • Monitor project costs, budgets, forecasts, and financial performance to maximise revenue and profitability.
  • Prepare and manage accurate cost reports, reconciliations, and financial forecasts.
  • Implement and monitor effective cost control measures, including asset management, plant and equipment reconciliations, and cost coding.
  • Manage project certification processes, valuations, payments, and final accounts.
  • Identify commercial risks and opportunities and implement strategies to mitigate risks and enhance project profitability.
  • Ensure compliance with contractual obligations, construction legislation, labour regulations, environmental requirements, and health and safety standards.
  • Administer contracts effectively, including guarantees, cessions, penalties, insurance requirements, and insolvency matters.
  • Manage contractual claims, variations, disputes, and contract close-out processes.
  • Develop and maintain project documentation and commercial control systems.
  • Collaborate closely with project teams and stakeholders to identify efficiencies, improve commercial outcomes, and resolve project challenges.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, consultants, contractors, and subcontractors.
  • Negotiate and manage subcontractor agreements to ensure commercial and contractual compliance.
  • Provide expert commercial and contractual advice to clients and project teams.
  • Lead, mentor, coach, and develop junior Quantity Surveyors and commercial team members.
  • Set performance objectives, manage team performance, and support employee development initiatives.
  • Promote a culture of accountability, collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement within the team.
  • Ensure alignment with company policies, procedures, systems, and governance standards.
Qualifications and Experience:
  • Tertiary Degree or Diploma in Quantity Surveying or a related field.
  • Professional registration with the South African Council for the Quantity Surveying Profession preferred.
  • Membership of Association of South African Quantity Surveyors and/or an MBA qualification would be advantageous.
  • Minimum of 7 years' technical Quantity Surveying experience.
  • Minimum of 2 years' managerial or leadership experience.
